Louis Escobar Way Renaming Ceremony

Wednesday, August 18, 2021

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, Toledo City Council Member Nick Komives, and other members of city council invite the public to attend the official street renaming ceremony of “Louis Escobar Way” at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18. The event will be held at the intersection of Adams and 13th streets.

Mr. Escobar, who became the first gay man and first Latino to be elected to Toledo City Council, eventually serving as its president, died at the age of 70 in August 2020.

“Louis Escobar was an outstanding public servant, but more importantly, he was an even better person, and when we served together on Toledo City Council, he was someone who I looked up to and respected,” Mayor Kapszukiewicz said. “Toledo was fortunate to have such a dedicated public servant.”

“Louis was a trailblazer and leaves behind an incredible legacy in Toledo,” Council Member Komives said. “We are honored to rename a portion of Adams Street – very close to what is now ‘Pride Way’ – after Louis Escobar.”

Mr. Escobar served two four-year terms on Toledo City Council, including three years as president.

Kelly Altenberger, Mr. Escobar’s husband, is expected to attend the ceremony and speak.
